Lana's sound has always been hugely cinematic, so it makes sense that her music videos have been an important component during her infiltration of the zeitgeist and our hearts. The new video for "West Coast" isn't a docudrama about JFK and there's no several-minute opening monologue about being in "the winter of [her] life"—it's just classic, kind of sad LDR in romantic black and white. Watch her hang on the beach with one lover and act all solemn and woozy in the back of a car with another (much older) one, all leading up to a weird transition where it's suddenly in technicolor and Lana's engulfed in corny-looking flames. I don't really get it, but it feels on-brand...a meticulous homage to nothing in particular.
