There are always opposites at play in Kuwait-born, NYC-based artist Fatima Al Qadiri's work. Nothing is ever quite what it seems. On new track "Shanghai Freeway", bright, naive tones and the menacing grind of heavy bass rub shoulders uneasily. It's both kind of creepy yet impossible to tear yourself away from all the same. "Shanghai Freeway" is taken from Asiatisch (that's the cover art above), Al Qadiri's debut album that seeks to untangle and examine the many aspects of an "imaginary China" that only exists in the minds of the West. In other words, a crucial listen. It's out May 5th on Hyperdub.
