There's a feeling that is indigenous to summertime backyards at dusk, after barbecues or picnics, when the only remnants of the day are exhaustion and a stickiness from fruit juices and sweat. Pure X's video for "Heaven," off their just-released LP, Angel, is a pearl made from the dirt of that feeling. In this Ben Kitnick-directed clip for the song, an aesthetic of garages, worn-out circuses, and demolition derbies at that moment when burning sun turns to desert night roots the golden spaciness of the audio, drawing out the earthiness of the vocals. The video for "Heaven" digs into something darker than listlessness, however, as the rural scenes are intercut with shots of Corey Busboom, known for appearing in the 2005 film Modify, hanging himself from a tree by hooks attached the skin of his chest. It's gruesome, especially the strange juxtaposition of his pink cotton candy-coated fingers and his chest dripping with dark blood. Pure X repeats, You can have it anytime you want, heaven's a feeling, and what feels like the passing sensation of summer light fading to fall begins to feel a lot more ominous.
