Tonight Nicki Minaj called Hot 97's Angie Martinez to talk about her new single, the the controversy it's stirred and the albums it's destined for. Their chat was, essentially, the first interview Nicki's given since she dropped "Boss Ass Bitch" and kicked off a hot streak that now includes two more remixes and that single, "Lookin' Ass Nigga."
The Malcolm X image she used to promote "Lookin' Ass Nigga" drew heat on Twitter and inspired (at least) two Change.org petitions. This morning she apologized for the upset it caused and impressed that the artwork was "in no way to undermine [Malcolm X's] efforts and legacy" in a lengthy note posted to her Instagram. Tonight, she laughed: "When am I not pissing people off? I don't even try at this point."
"This record is to have fun and to talk about, not to be disrespectful to someone's legacy," she said. Rather, it's meant to empower women as only another woman can. She snuck a little dig at Jay Z and Justin Timberlake in along the way:
"I think it's a great conversation to have. There's so many records that come out daily and they are nothing but bashing females, and I think that I am in the position to put a record out that women can feel empowered by in our way, you know? Not in no 'Suit and Tie' way, in our way. … We never get a chance to talk crazy, and we don't always want to tell you how much we love you."
The song will be on both the upcoming YMCMB posse album and her own, The Pink Print-- which, she said, won't be given a proper release date-- not until she's really sure it's ready, at least. "I'm not trying to pull a B," she explained, "I'm just gonna chill for a second."
