FADER PREMIERE
Side A of Highway Transmissions, the new tape from Edmonton-based songwriter Calvin Love, was recorded live at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn during last year's CMJ marathon. He played a tight set of off-kilter guitar jams, including highlights from his New Radar LP and two tracks from his most recent 7-inch. The flip side of the cassette is less focused but just as engaging; it contains a bunch of home-recordings Love made between 2007 and now—a manic collection of crudely-rendered rock songs and fragmented sonics. About 50 minutes in, an emotionally-vacant female voice starts reading a poem over some solemn keyboard chords, making for a sad, spooky, kind-of-perfect ending. Stream the whole thing below, and pick up a physical tape over at Hit City USA, which is releasing it as part of their "Nice Touch" mixtape series. Love also just announced a North American tour with Montreal pop band TOPS; those dates are below.
