FADER PREMIERE
Kansas City native Kevin Morby has been kicking around the Brooklyn rock scene for the past five years, playing bass in long-time psych-folk band Woods and sharing front-person duties with ex-Vivian Girls member Cassie Ramone in The Babies. Around Thanksgiving last year, he dropped his first solo album via Woods-affiliated imprint Woodsist—a narrative-driven "homage to New York City" with the sort of sparse, clean production that really showcases his skills as a songwriter and wordsmith. Here's a vaguely Hawaiian hula-themed, Adarsha Benjamin-directed video for the suspensefully unfolding title track "Harlem River," featuring a lyrical nod to Lou Reed's "Heroin" (I think) and co-starring actress Jena Malone (for some reason).
