On January 14th, Paradise of Bachelors will reissue a little-known album from folk singer M.C. Taylor, recorded over a few bitter-cold months in the winter of 2010 at the kitchen table of his rural home in Piedmont, North Carolina. Mining his own feelings of existential uncertainty surrounding the global economic crisis that was in full swing at the time, Bad Debt was symbolically lost when copies of the original CD edition were destroyed warehouse fire during the London riots of 2011, then all but forgotten in the wake of his more widely publicized 2011 and 2013 albums under the Hiss Golden Messenger moniker, Poor Moon and Haw. The title track, which is streaming below, pairs some wholesome country fingerpicking with Taylor's expressively cracking croon, shakily forecasting good news with a hand-hewn simplicity that feels very not-of-this-time and but also wholly American.
