I don't even think I wrote about the first installment, for whatever reason, but Squadda B's 2011 album I Smoke Because I Dont Care About Death has always been one of my favorite Green Ova releases—not even to listen to, necessarily, but just to read the title in iTunes. Unlike the first installation, the followup released today was exclusively and capably produced by the Oakland rapper himself. Highlights are the goofy "Whoa Woa Woa Woaaa," which dallies in a ’50s doo-wop and rises like steam from a kettle, the weirdly delivered "Ball For You/Pretty Please" and super-weirdly executed piano track "Strapped Or Die (Why)"—Squadda sounds freshest when his template is basically shapeless. His cohort MondreM.A.N,, who's featured on the album, has an LP coming out in November; check out the new video for "MC ILLIN" for more. Friendzone's new DX mix features a Squadda track too.
