Over the weekend, Ka—who released the very good Grief Pedigree last year—posted up outside of Fat Beats former Manhattan location to sell copies of his new album, The Night's Gambit. It was a symbolic move that both promoted legit human-to-human interaction while recalling the era of boots-to-the-pavement grassroots rap sales that the street in front of Fat Beats fostered for so many years. Only now, instead of buying Percee P CD-Rs, you could buy The Night's Gambit in multiple formats directly from Ka. "Off The Record" is from that album, and while the video mostly features Ka crate-digging (not a surprise based on the title), the song is built on a greasy guitar loop and the sort of half-mumbled storytelling that Ka nailed on Grief Pedigree and often sounds as threatening as it does detailed. The Night's Gambit is out right now. Get it here.
