Peter Rosenberg Finally Got Nicki Minaj to Talk to Him About Last Year’s Summer Jam

May 28, 2013

Last year, hyping up an early crowd outside MetLife stadium, where Hot 97's annual Summer Jam concert would be held hours later, station DJ Peter Rosenberg jokingly diminished Nicki Minaj, the night's eventual headliner. "I see the real hip-hop heads sprinkled in here. I see them. I know there are some chicks here waiting to sing 'Starships’ later. I’m not talking to y’all right now,” he said. “I’m here to talk about real hip-hop shit.” Because of those comments, Minaj pulled out of the show. A day later, she defended the cancellation on air with Hot 97's DJ Funkmaster Flex. Today, almost a year later, she agreed to speak with Rosenberg. "By sheer proxy of dealing with her, she made me more poppin," said the DJ this morning. Minaj countered, "I never found you funny. I never found you entertaining. I never found you smart… I can't even act like I care anymore." Referring to her pop hits and renewed focus on rap, she continued, "I am not your typical rapper. I am not your typical person… I never put a limit on myself. I don't like when, especially black women, put a limit of what they can do… I liked ["Starships"]… If I really wanted to right now, I could go back in and make another pop song like that. And I'm choosing not to do it. I'm chosing to get back to my essence and feed the core hip-hop fan."
