Stream: Pure X, “Thousand Year Old Child”

There are some things about Pure X’s new album, Crawling up the Stairs, that will come as a surprise to longtime fans of the soulful Texas slowburners—their use of synths and vocoded vocals, for instance, and the album's relatively skronk-free, studio-hewn production sound. But "Thousand Year Old Child" is just classic, gut-wrenching, minimalist-cum-maximalist Pure X, all patient, pillowy snare hits and walking-pace funk bass and tormented, into-the-red guitar. Look for the album on May 14th, when it drops via Acéphale/Merok, and read Sam Hockley-Smith's 2011 profile on their extended Austin family.
