Every week a different FADER staff member will pick a clothing item or accessory that he or she has lately been spending a lot of time with—or would like to—and write a little love letter to it. We would’ve done a column on who we’re dating but that seemed a little bit much. This week Naomi talks about her Motel paisley shortalls.

Recently, Twitter made it possible to download and browse everything you've ever written there. A quick dip in to my archive reveals some not-so-surprising facts: I almost always wrote in ALL CAPS in 2009; I tweeted a ton about riding the bus in 2010 and complained more than once about accidentally ending up in Yonkers. Another consistent theme is the utility of rompers. "Put on my thinking overalls," I reported one May. I remember the pair: flimsy denim that I'd cut into too-short shorts, bleached white then dyed blue in my sink. Not suitable clothing for going anywhere, really, but they were great to wear; roomy but flattering, lots of ventilation, four pockets. Motel's Demi playsuit, which is the color of sky and the weight of a picnic napkin, isn't dissimilar from my "thinking" cutoffs. Since the summer I wore those my routines have changed; now I go to an office every day, try to clean my house and get lots of sleep. But shortalls—pulled-together, efficient but comfortable—are still what I want to have on when I have to get something done. It's not warm enough in New York to wear this Motel suit out regularly yet, but it's been great in Austin. I can't wait to pull it on this summer, all breezy and baggy and ready to work.
