Maria Minerva’s made her voice into an interesting instrument. On past releases, she's let her voice go flat when you'd expect it to rise, been distant when you expect her to be emotional. Half the time it works, and the rest of the time, it's a worthwhile experiment. As an artist, Minerva is clearly still figuring out where she fits, and it's fascinating to listen. Here, she turns in a straightforward, understated and often gorgeous vocal performance on Hervé’s "Gold," which is built on woozy organs and isolated snaps. It's a minimal, soft-focus track, and worth repeated listens to catch all of Hervé's subtle production tricks. His new album, The Art of Disappearing, features guest spots from Austra, Niki & The Dove and more. It's out March 4th on Cheap Thrills.
