On his new mixtape, Illusions of Grandeur 2, the sequel to one of his greatest of all time, Lil B sounds his best at his most lazy and deliberate. Maybe it's the autumn sluggishness in New York, but I just want to hear him drudge, like on "Broken Levee" and "Hood Played Out." The latter features a great run reminiscent of How to Dress Well's list of I miss yous on "Set It Right," but Lil B's malaise, like a robot powering down, is far more convincing that How to Dress Well's lilting dramatics. The syllables roll off like a wheelbarrow dumping big rocks: Trying to lock me down till I turn 46/ My main goon died, my boy S died/ My boy Mark died, then Lil C died/ Bruh-brother got life, cousin went back twice/ L died, I forgot how to cry.
