Stream: Chelsea Wolfe, “Flatlands”

October 01, 2012

The thing with Chelsea Wolfe is that she just goes for it. Listening to her music, there's no sense of distance between the songs she's writing and herself. She's willing to use maudlin strings, to be completely and utterly serious. It's an admirable trait, and it's a scary thing to do as an artist. Wolfe commits herself to each song, and whether you like it or not sot of becomes irrelevant, because someone out there is finding something reflecting back at them when they listen to this stuff. So here she is with "Flatlands," the latest in a string of releases from her upcoming album Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs (out October 16th on Sargent House). It's all dark Americana—music for staring down a highway or maybe just imagining you're staring down a highway. "Flatlands" is a deeply, deeply lonely song that proves that Wolfe is really good at constructing songs designed for people with heavy headspaces, looking to music for emotional fortitude.
