The second edition of the vitaminwater uncapped college shows, the most surprise-packed yet, took place in Houston last night in a tiny airplane hangar-like venue, literally called Venue. The show was awarded to the students of Texas Southern University after TSU rocked the vote in a contest to bring uncapped to their school. For this they got Miguel, French Montana and a bevy of surprises that only could have happened at an H-Town uncapped show.
97.9's DJ J-Que got bodies in motion early with a few club bangers from a time forgotten, including Cam'ron's "Suck It Or Not" and Missy Elliot's "Hot Boyz." Surprisingly enough, it was DJ Webstar's Harlem dance staple "Chicken Noodle Soup" that set things all the way off, students hopping out of their seats to "let it rain" and "clear it out." Once the lid was off though, it wasn't going back on, a dance circle forming in the middle of the floor for E-40's "Function."
The dancers would only be upstaged by the person taking the stage, Miguel appearing suddenly to the shrieks of just about every female in the building. He led a club-wide sing along of hits "Sure Thing," "Lotus Flower Bomb," and "All I Want Is You." For "Lotus Flower Bomb," he slung one leg up on a stage monitor and let the mic swing between his legs, a fitting charade to intro the sultry "Pussy Is Mine." He'd also pantomime 2Pac's "I Get Around" before performing his own "Quickie" and then "Adorn," the lead single from upcoming album Kaleidoscope Dream.
For his second set, DJ J-Que went full hometown hero to the delight of the student body, firing off Beat King's "You Ain't Bout Dat Life Hoe," Fat Pimp's "Roll Me Up," and Young Nation's "Pimp." With the crowd fully-crunked, not to mention vitaminwater-hydrated, hostess Miss Info brought out French Montana, glowing in a USA flag sweater and pair of abnormally icey "dough boy" rosary necklaces. He ran through a slew of guest verses, including ones recorded for Machine Gun Kelly's "Wild Boy (Remix)" and Big Sean's "Mula." The next guest verse, however, would come from the people's champ himself, Paul Wall, who jumped out to perform "Still Tippin" and "Sitting Sideways." Montana continued with "9000 Watts" and the NYC anthem "Shot Caller" and the whole of Rick Ross' "Stay Scheming," rapping everyone else's verses along with his. "Sometimes you gotta just let the whole song ride out," he said. And though Montana didn't have Drake, Ross or Weezy on hand, he did have the living legend Bun B, who came out to perform Pimp C's verse from "Get Throwed." After Bun, came Montana's finale in "Pop That," and also a last second appearance from Trae tha Truth, who'd have the very last word, with an acapella performance of "Give My Last Breath." TSU students bopped their way out of Venue to the sounds of "Cashing Out," immediately regaling each other with highlights of a show they didn't want to end.
