"Free Mind" is the latest from Joel Ford of Ford and Lopatin’s Airbird solo project. The track starts lingeringly with random R2-D2 bleeps and the sound of hand-to-drum percussion, setting us firmly in a retro vision of the future, before launching into the present future where legitimix—a new track-licensing platform that allows producers to sample copyrighted works—enables him to cut up Mariah Carey's "Prisoner" to the point of making her very singular voice sound like an anonymous diva. "Free Mind" feels like a free association, blips of memories amassed in the interest of moving your body.
