Growing Up Amish: A Memoir by Ira Wagler: I'd been having trouble falling asleep lately so I ventured into the dangerous arena of late-night Kindle shopping, where I stumbled upon Growing Up Amish by Ira Wagler. I thought that the book would be dry enough to naturally alleviate my sleeping troubles. It turns out it's a beautifully written memoir about a man's struggles to fit into the regimented Amish lifestyle and his inability to live outside of it. Many people are already aware of the Rumspringa, the period where Amish youth have the chance to explore their freedom. It turns out there is a lot more than the fabled "wild" phase to intrigue the reader about the Amish ways of life.
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin: I started reading A Song of Ice and Fire recently, as I had been following the television show Game of Thrones. This is a complete phenomenal masterpiece of fantasy, and it's been great company. I'm not going to try to summarize thousands of pages into a sentence but this book description can wet your palate!
Remember, Be Here Now by Ram Dass: Written by spiritual teacher Ram Das, this is essentially a handbook or "bible" on spirituality, meditation and yoga. I am finding reading this and keeping it nearby really helpful on my path to natural ways of finding peace. It has beautiful illustrations and is packed full of insights and tips on living in the present and enlightenment.
Cooks Illustrated: I love reading about and discovering new recipes and learning new cooking techniques. I love this magazine for the gorgeous illustrations and step by step instructions on how to cook pretty much everything.
