On paper, the whole concept of Freddie Gibbs and Madlib working together seems kind of weird—but when you think about it, the way they play off each other is great. Gibbs is an exacting rapper, every word is clear even when he's rapping fast, while Madlib flips beautifully sloppy loops and unexpected beat change ups. It works as a push-and-pull between the two artists, with Gibbs grounding and shaping Madlb's more esoteric tendencies. Gibbs and Madlib's Shame EP is out now on Stones Throw.
