On a recent visit to Canada, Metta World Peace, the Lakers forward formerly known as Ron Artest, spoke with Nardwuar. The two make a perfect pair, as they're both polarizing—World Peace for his penchant for on-court brawling, Nardwuar for his Fed-level knowledge of his subjects' backgrounds. The two talk about Tragedy, World Peace's favorite rapper from his home Queensbridge, the former Vancouver Grizzlies (the team moved to Memphis in 2001), World Peace's understanding of Canada as a child and players who double as rappers. They also go over the tracklist of still-dumbfounding 1994 Epic Records compilation, B-Ball's Best Kept Secret, replete with verses from Jason Kidd and Gary Payton. World Peace calls Allen Iverson's 2000 single, "40 Bars" one of the best tracks of that year. (Iverson's since improved his rap skills. Practice.) But what makes the whole, surprisingly docile interview great is when, right around the six-minute mark, World Peace tells the story of his first time meeting Kobe Bryant.
