Every week a different FADER staff member will pick a clothing item or accessory that he or she has lately been spending a lot of time with—or would like to—and write a little love letter to it. We would’ve done a column on who we’re dating but that seemed a little bit much. This week Duncan talks about A.P.C. lightweight windbreaker.

My wardrobe has always been super sparse—two pairs of jeans in the same style, a handful of crew necks, three T-shirts—but for as long as I can remember, I've bought too many jackets. It's like an anxious shopping tic. Something in every color, every weight, made for men, made for women. I guess I figure if the rest of my clothes budget is low, there's room to spare for indulgences like this dark green A.P.C. windbreaker. Owning it is a little gratuitous: my winter coat is the same color, and I've got this other floppy, olive gardener's thing, plus already too many spring jackets in other colors. But nothing quite so delicate, that falls just the right way, that reminds me of nature camp in Maine and blocking mosquitoes with the thinnest layer of clothing possible. Or that has a drawstring hood. That's what sold me, really: something new to awkwardly tug and fiddle in nervous moments. Every passing, warmer New York week is a threat to my new windbreaker's relevance at the front of my closet, but the other day, fighting a 36-hour downpour in something I loved, it was exactly what I needed.
