By far one of the most ridiculous conversations ever is to talk to people about desert island records, because if we all really had to pick one album to bring to some dry island in the middle of nowhere as we lived out the rest of our existence hunting salamanders and eating coconuts, it would obviously be a "Hotel California" 12-inch. Just kidding! Unless that is your choice, in which case, good for you. Anyway, if I ever found myself in that awful situation, I'd probably end up bringing this Bola record. I'm not saying that because it's my favorite thing ever put to tape, it's more about the vibe of "Abayetidu Ma," which is a perfect snapshot of the album: vocals swell so high it feels like they're about to burst and the whole thing is imbued with a sort of joy that goes so far over the top that it feels almost melancholy. Volume 7 is out April 2nd on Awesome Tapes From Africa.
