What if the internet didn't exist and we had to do everything old style and look stuff up in encyclopedias or just guess/lie/pretend that we knew about what we wanted to know about? If that happened, Pond would be in a pretty good place based on their album title alone, because if there are three words that are generally good ones to describe the sound of this band in an abstract sense, they are Beard, Wives, Denim. In the past, when I've written about this band, I've talked about bong rips, sunsets, LA in the early ’90s, and I think a year or two ago there was some sort of mention of a flute or a dragon or something? Beard, Wives, Denim covers all those angles—moving from sleazy rock excess, to introspective, cracked psychedelia and back again, like it's totally normal for those things to coexist in one place. It's not really so normal though, and that's what makes Pond worthwhile in the first place. Rather than act like there's nothing new to do in rock music anymore, they're just trying a little bit of everything. Beard, Wives, Denim is out March 6th, on Modular.
