Is there a specific genre name for music that is so ecstatic and inclusive that it feels like the entire world is involved in making it? No? Can someone make up a not annoying one, because we kinda need it now. Jonathan Boulet’s "Trounce" is all huge vocals, layers and layers of drums and a super dark guitar thump. It's difficult to make music like this, mainly because it can easily fall into a trap where it sounds too culty or too overly positive, or generally just...off putting. Like there's a whole crew of people on a stage that are all in on a terrifying joke involving ritual suicide. Boulet avoids all that mainly by wedding dark lyrics and gnarly introspection to such a huge sound. It's not immediately obvious, but it's there. His unwieldy-titled We Keep The Beat, Found The Sound, See The Need, Start The Heart is out this June on Modular.
