Baltimore's
Co La—himself the recent recipient of a great left-field remix by
Animal Collective’s
Avey Tare—has lent his remix hand to "It's My Part," a song that's basically
already great, jubilant and emotive as any of
Jonquil’s releases. Somewhat surprisingly, given Co La's usual penchant for messier sound collage, the remix's most poignant parts are when things get super simple, when the popcorn-cooker beat works into a steady groove and everything else bows graciously out, leaving straightforward guitar strums and Hugo Manuel's sweet voice (you might recognize him from his solo project,
Chad Valley). Even when he sings on-second-thought downers like,
I must've been what you wanted at the time/ But now that I see the things I’ve learned/ I realized I wasn’t the first one, Manuel's voice is naturally buoyant, and for that, there's hope. Jonquil's new album,
Point of Go, is streaming in its incredible entirety
here, and it's out February 21st via
Dovecote.
