There are elements of the avant-garde ever-present in Julia Holter’s songs, but they bleed into pop. "In the Same Room" is more of the latter than the former, though it teeters. Holter sounds as though she loves the vocal experiments of Joan LaBarbara and the punch of Beach House equally. To those with an investment of the fringes of music, Holter is a blessing and a conundrum. Who does she belong to? This video, directed by photographer Hilary Walsh, grabs onto the song's overarching ethereal quality by portraying it through dream sequence, Holter singing in black and white amidst color nature.
Holter has also just announced her debut NYC date to celebrate the release of her album, Ekstatis. Says her label RVNG: Tuesday, March 6th at Le Poisson Rouge. Holter is arranging material from her 2011 album Tragedy and forthcoming Ekstasis alongside cellist Christopher Votek and percussionist Corey Fogel. Holter & Co. will be joined by Bay Area pianist Sarah Cahill, who will perform a program of solo piano music called "The Mystical Tone." The Holter trio has a few other surprises while they're in NYC, so keep an ear to the sky. Co-presented by Wordless Music, the Le Poisson Rouge show will also serve to celebrate the release of Ekstasis.
