On Julia Holter's Fact mix, she juxtaposes the exhale of brake pumps into sustained singing by Laura Steenberge. That's not too long after a snippet of Michael Jackson and just before some birthday dedications on the radio. It's a unique mix, a particularly personal take on collage made popular by everyone from Christian Marclay to Negativland. But whereas this type of music is often purposefully grotesque, Holter's mix is diary-like, even when it occasionally turns loud. The parts with the percussion and the parrots are really neat.
