Steve Gunn is really good at guitar. We were first turned onto him this summer by a friend (NPR) and were stoked to have him over to Heathers for an Open Bar session. His LP from 2009, Boerum Palace helped define him as a singer-songwriter who beautifully fuses traditional American folksongs with an Indian raga influence. He plucks in and out of improvised melodies, singing rather softly about heartbreak or nighttime, or anything else that tugs at the heartstrings. Gunn releases music as a solo artist and also occasionally joins up with drummer John Truscinski to form the Gunn-Truscinksi Duo. Together, they have a new release coming in late March through Three Lobed Recordings. Watch Gunn do "Old Strange" solo above.
