Cascine, the little label with some of 2011's most charming sounds, has entered the new year, hoisting two of their most distinctive artists, Southern Shores and Selebrities, across the calendar gap and into this weird, uncertain future. The two groups linked with Philadelphia's Work Drugs out of mutual admiration and friendship, crafting totally them remixes of Work Drugs' "Ice Wharf," a song lovingly dedicated to near-blackouts in Camden. Southern Shores' take begins with a typically un-googlable vocal sample ("It was a nice look… it's my season, man"), leading into one of their best hand-drummed, zero-stress, secret beach-just-around-the-bend vibes ever. Meanwhile, Selebrities guide the track into their cherry blossom-covered time machine, spin the dial and transport "Ice Wharfs" straight to prom, 1985. It's all brilliant, expectedly, and a happy sign that, against all odds and doomsday election-year rhetoric, in 2012 things might actually get better.
