Even though this is officially a BJ the Chicago Kid track, it's West Coast wunderkind Kendrick Lamar who takes the reins for the first half of the song. K-Dot sounds like he's on the verge of tears as he goes into full-on blues-rap mode, dropping real (remorseful) talk about witnessing the effects of cancer, custody battles and shootouts over a drumless piano line. Then he breaks into his ex-girlfriend's house and presumably feels pretty bad about it. By the time BJ the Chicago Kid (and the drums) come in, the case has already been made.
