There is sometimes an unfortunate connotation that comes with electronic music from the 1990s. It's not that it was all bad, there was a lot of wild experiments going on, and significant portions of the artists attempting them actually succeeded, but there were also chill out rooms, an overabundance of songs that sounded like lounging in an egg-shaped chair while eating a bland crostini and a generally weird vibe that is for some reason synonymous in my mind with eating Asian Fusion food in an airport? Andrew Weatherall and Keith Tenniswood, as Two Lone Swordsmen, thankfully didn't really contribute much to the bad aspects of that era, instead choosing to incorporate post punk and other weird shit into the electronic music they were already making. It felt extremely vital. In more recent years, Weatherall has been recording solo (he also produced Fuck Buttons’ still great Tarot Sport), and now he's got this remix of Cut Copy’s "Sun God," which is basically psych-guitar jangle gone hiccuping rave. No actual vocals, just endless hypnotic spirals and some whispering. It doesn't sound new, but it doesn't sound particularly old either. Instead it's the track for the middle of your next mix, a bridge to the future or the past, depending on how you want to go.
