Just this week, we published a conversation with Walter Van Beirendonck from our most recent issue. He spoke to us quite sweetly about the weirdness of his designs and his subversion of bodily ideals. But seeing his clothes up close, as we did at the Various Projects showroom on Tuesday, you realize just how approachable and wearable so many of his pieces actually are. In fact, his spring 2012 collection is a take on the conservative, flattering era of clothes from the early 1960s, and it's the tiny details that keep things looking truly Walter. A poppy Palm Springs button-down shirt with short sleeves has a creepy embroidered face on the front pocket and a blazer has kaleidoscopic patterns that converge right at a point that draws attention to a person's nipples.
