Comic books and heroic tales are hardly ever written or marketed to little girls, but lately pop divas have been picking up the slack, utilizing empowerment imagery at every chance and sending healing love to teen girls and gay boys everywhere. In a new video, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna team up to survey a terrible plane crash and kung-fu against crime, but there's no sign in the video of the citizens they're trying to protect. Instead, they look at the camera and gaze at us, the audience: we're the ones that need saving. Superheroes always emerge when we need them most, and even if we didn't know that we were crying out for help, these queens sense our pain.
