It's easy to unfairly pit contemporary directors against Godard (or have that moment when you think: this movie would be so much better if Godard had directed it"), which is why I really appreciate David Dean Burkhart's video for Grimes' track "Vanessa." He totally gets it! This song would be—and is!— super cool set to various tracking shots and jump cuts from Godard's 1965 film, Alphaville. The song has a vaguely creepy, futuristic sound, which fits Godard's dystopian sci-fi vision, brought to life by the gnarled face of secret agent Lemmy Caution (played by Eddie Constantine) and the decidedly un-gnarled face of Natacha Von Braun (played by Godard's wife at the time, Anna Karina). Je vous aime! Grimes' split EP Darkbloom is out April 12th on Arbutus.
