Pure X used to be called Pure Ecstasy. We've said that a lot so we're probably going to stop saying it. The name is different but the meaning is still there. The band is from Austin, Texas and they're music is painfully, beautifully slow but not careful. It's not immediately apparent, but "Back Where I Began" and the rest of the songs from the re-release of their first EP on Light Lodge/Acephale, were recorded live with no overdubbing, flaws incorporated into the song as a whole. It's earthy music, but not in the hippie way, instead it sounds like it is from the earth. Sustained bass notes riding into drone territory, guitars almost glittering if they were a little less heavy. At the forefront are Nate Grace's vocals, which sound pained and open. Like he spent a huge amount of time emotionally withdrawn and just recently figured out how to let all the pent up shit fly free. Pure X make some of the most pleasantly heavy music out there, and when Summer finally hits and we can blast this from some janky computer speakers while standing on a gummy blacktop roof it'll feel just right. Just in time for those humid moments, Pure X's full length Pleasure will be out July 5th. The band is also touring for most of May, those dates are below the song.
