Across the six songs of Africa Hitech’s 93 Million Miles album sampler (its title referring either to our distance to the sun or a Jared Leto song), jet-setting men-about-the-dance-world Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek craft a sound indebted to as many subgenres as we can count. But the end result is wholly their own, future bass and past united under Spacek’s vocodered patois. The final track, “Out in the Streets,” their insane juke take on Ini Kamoze, still looms large over the whole project, just an impossibly exciting beat, but new additions have us even more excited to cop a full length, like the Sun Ra sampling “Light the Way” (starts at 2:40). Africa Hitech is fun because it’s kind of hard. As jittery and bubbly as the tracks get, you’re leaning into your speaker trying nail down the exact drum beat, trying to guess exactly what Spacek’s saying. The album’s out May 9th on Warp, it's starting to feel huge.
