Every week a different FADER staff member will pick a clothing item or accessory that he or she has lately been spending a lot of time with—or would like to—and write a little love letter to it. We would’ve done a column on who we’re dating but that seemed a little bit much. This week Kayla Monetta writes about Matiko Ronnie Wedge Boot.
I almost fell holding the torah at my Bat Mitzvah because of a pair of hot pink Steve Madden heels. My mother forced me to celebrate my coming into womanhood by wearing footwear six inches higher than my broken-soled black Converse low tops. So on my first day as a woman, I wrote off heels forever.
As a self-proclaimed shoe fanatic, I have about every type of flat shoe ever made. My pathetic heel count? Three. Being a vertically challenged woman living in New York, I've always hoped for a way to hold my own against the she-giraffes ordering drinks over my head while standing in front of me at shows. Peep the Matiko Ronnie Wedge black leather boot, my new favorite pair of shoes, better than my thousand pairs of flats. They've got a hidden heel, my own personal booster seat at the kids' table. They've also got a banging leather exterior, rubber sole and padded collar. They look high class Manhattan. I may be cheating with the whole “hidden wedge” thing, but it’s a step in the right direction and I am actually comfortable. I can walk tall like an Amazon and still hold on to my tomboy roots. And then when I've worked up enough courage, the Lita Jeffrey Campbell 5+ inch platform heel is next.
