Kabul’s First and Only Skatepark

The folks who made Skateistan: To Live and Skate Kabul, a short film shown at this year at Sundance, call it their effort to document, "their daily struggle to break down social, gender, and ethnic barriers between the children of a war-torn country." They filmed for over a year, distilled the footage down to moving ten minute mission statement on how important it is for youth to have the freedom to escape whatever surrounds them. Still, skateboarding tends to get put to task no matter where kids are trying to do it all around the world, and the kids in Kabul face a few more obstacles along the path to their new skate park than most of us can say we have ever faced. You can watch the whole cut of the movie here and learn about the Skateistan organization responsible for the park and it's programs, here.
