In 1997 when Jay-Z was dropping some of the hottest raps people who hadn't ever heard rap had ever heard and released "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," Cam'ron was rapping in a group called Children Of The Corn alongside Big L, Mase and his cousin Bloodshed. Then a tragic car accident killed Bloodshed and disbanded the group, Cam met Biggie and made it out the other side with an Untertainment/Epic record deal. 14 years later Cam'ron sounds good as ever hogging the same sample. It's a twist; the delivery is mellow like Jay's but sillier, the backtrack is less crisp. A sour life doesn't sound hard but fun and trash baroque: talking to Jesus via text but he don't care, being adored by your dealer, dealing only in the joy of hard cash, wearing board shorts and still needing to say, "cant lie to you girl, girl I hate your nails." Vado doesn't get his final words in til almost three minutes down the way, confirms the slime-life is open to anyone, says you can come over and eat what he's cooking. "Sour Life" was not on the tracklist posed yesterday for the long-rumored Cam'ron and Vado album Gunz N' Butta. That album has no release date, but this bodes well for a first-quarter drop.
