As we head into the chilly throes of autumn, the latest Spring 2011 lookbook from Upstate has left us already pining for warm weather. Lookbook aside, it's not all summertime fun for the Brooklyn brand—they use the ancient Japanese art of shibori, a truly labor-intensive dyeing process, to make these amazing patterns. All in all, Upstate plays around with elaborate methods of binding, folding, and compressing the fabric and even slight variations in their methodology can create wildly different results. Nothing good ever comes easy, even if it looks as relaxed as an ocean breeze.
