Glasser and Ryuichi Sakamoto Play the Piano (Not Together)

July 30, 2010

Glasser also does other things on her new album, Ring, whereas on his double album, Ryuichi Sakamoto mostly just plays the piano. That is because his new album is called Playing the Piano. The legendary Japanese parallel to Brian Eno and former member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, Sakamoto has had an extremely plentiful and diverse career, careening from number one (in Japan) pop hits to experimental tones with wacked composers. Glasser has been alive less years than Sakamoto's professional career has existed, but this is a quality not quantity game. Ring is a heavily complex and lovingly bombastic record of all sorts of instrumentation (some from Japan). Sakamoto's first CD of music is strictly his dexterous piano playing, but the second CD is piano plus collaborations with younger followers of his stranger moments, like Fennesz. There's no reason Glasser should not be a part of that happy, weird conversation. Both albums have trailers, see Glasser's above and Sakamoto's below.
