Drop the Lime Has a New Rockabilly Band (Seriously)

July 21, 2010

You know, maybe it sounds weird, but we've always wondered about Drop the Lime's hairdo. His signature cute swoop of bangs skews pompadour, and there's something a little hellion in his goth-leaning look—pointy toes, tight pants, lots of black. This is relevant because in retrospect, his style was our only subtle clue into his current guitar project (his production released under vampire-bat-crazy sub-heavy label Trouble & Bass certainly didn't presage it). On his new 7-inch out on Scion A/V, disguised in the moniker Bad Lupo Grande, he sounds like the house band at Hank's Saloon (a rockabilly bar on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York that has flames painted on the walls). The A side, "Rockabilly Fever," is all ripping guitar licks and bad boy swing, while "Domini," coppable below, is a daintier, desert-invoking love instrumental. Both are bananas, confusing, unexpected and great. Most of all, they prove that Drop the Lime is capable of much more than we ever knew. Maybe a barbershop quartet is next?
