Ghetto Palms 101: Refixxx 3! Rihanna / Jahdan / Poirier / Wildlife / Westside / Vybz Kartel

May 12, 2010

God help me I cannot stop with the refixes. People just keep making joints, and there’s always a few in an odd tempo left over that become the point of embarkation for a whole new blend. This De Tropix re-imagining of Rihanna’s semi-tropical excursion “Rudeboy” is actually the one that originally sparked this whole concept three weeks ago, so now that I have finally put it out there, maybe I am done. For now.

Ghetto Palms Refix Blend 3
Rihanna, “Rudeboy” (Damon Alexander De Tropix refix)
The Juan Maclean, “Dancehall Malfunction” (DFA)
Poirier, “90’s Backyard” (Wildlife refix)
Dillon Francis & DJ Ammo, “Westside”
Nate Mars f. Jahdan, “Above and Beyond”
Vybz Kartel, “Clarks” (Champion Squad refix)

While I was in Rihanna’s town I threw the “Rudeboy” acapella over the ahead-of-it’s time “Dancehall Malfunction” track from the Juan Maclean, before launching into more “Pon De Floor”-type joints from Dillon Francis & DJ Ammo and Poirier, respectively. “’90s Backyard”—the Poirier one—is actually a refix by teutonic tropical madman Wildlife, who apparently is coming out soon with an entire album project of leftfield dancehall. Stay tuned!

Rounding out the mix is a new Jahdan vocal from the Nate Mars LP Concentric Circles and a wicked useful Champion Squad refix of Vybz’ “Clarks.” Seems like since Jahdan blew up all the producers who ever voiced him are dusting off their old DATs, because I heard through the Ghetto Palms grapevine that there’s gonna be an all one-drop JD Blakkamoore LP dropping soon too, courtesy of the Cali-connected Lustre Kings.

Anyway, a few other things you should know about: Sizzla has apparently taken the pan-tropical angle a little too much to heart, accepting a plot of land in Zimbabwe as payment for performing at Robert Mugabe’s birthday bashment, where he is reportedly going to settle down and start work on his next LP. The Egypt Noir project  I featured last week is now really available online and Ghetto Palm pioneers Konono No. 1 are featured on a deluxe new Congotronics box set which Crammed records has so far refused to airmail me from Belgium. Okay, keep it then.
