Stylee Fridays: Wood Wood Fall 09

March 13, 2009

There aren't many labels we know of that can do what Danish label Wood Wood do—a mellow kind of street elegance that somehow references European kookiness and Japanese workwear obsession all at once. The brand's Copenhagen flagship store, which houses sneakers and Comme des Garçons trinkets as well as their own clothes, is just as much a hang-out spot as it is a place to shop. There's a real sense that Wood Wood is a crew more than they are a design trio, which seems about right when you consider that designers Karl-Oskar, Brian Piv Jensen and Magnus Cartensen came up in the city's early graffiti scene. If you look closely at the new and recently showcased collection, there are plenty of really spot-on reworked Wood Wood staples to look forward to next fall: Tomboy appropriate blouses for the girls come in leather as well as chambray, and Mao-esque outerwear for the boys gets dip-dyed a paler shade of violet. They take the clothes we already understand and love and reinterpret them with unexpected flourishes. Cindy Lauper bangs for boys on the other hand, are entirely optional.
