Part XI: D-Nice, Hors D'oeuvres, Freeway, Fool's Gold Holiday Party
It's December and it's 60 degrees out and the end of the year is just a spittoon away. I'm not really touring right now, I'm locked up in the studio, so there's not that much field work for me to report. I went to Denver for a gig a filmed this hotel guide (above), I hope it can serve as a snack for your appetite for worldly tales until the zig-zagging starts again! This hotel's keys are so fancy that they charge you $35 if you lose them. The club I played for is owned by Beatport and I went to their office party/holiday dinner when I landed. I try to come in contact with hors d'oeuvres at least once a month so it was nice to cross that off the mental to-do until January comes around.
On Tuesday last week I went to this Lacoste DJ dinner which you can read about here. I was sitting at a table with Masta Ace, Do It All from Lords of the Underground and D-Nice from BDP. None of them are DJs (to my knowledge) but it added to the "only in New York"-ness of the evening. They have no idea who I am and I surely don't expect them to. One person who knows me (thank you, "Two Words") is Mr. one-song-a-day-for-a-month, Freeway... Peep the beard picture taken later that night at Highline Ballroom.
Aside from all this recording, I've just been trying to stay on top of my blogging duties over at djatrak.com. If you're interested in reading my thoughts about wombats, the canceling effects of being tall and being bald, rock groups who bite album covers from our friends, and why I'm loving NORE on Twitter, head on over there with reading glasses and your favorite pair of slippers. Oh and also, my record with Laidback Luke, "Shake It Down", is available now on vinyl and digital. It's #6 on the Beatport top 10! (What the heck??)
I will finish off this rather brief post with a big announcement to anyone who's in New York at the end of the week. On Friday, Pepsi Proper and The Fader present the Fool's Gold Family & Friends Holiday Bash with none other than DJ Premier, Cipha Sounds, The Brothers Macklovitch (who's that?), Sammy Bananas and Nick Catchdubs. It's an early event, starts at 9pm, and the venue is called Twelve21 (12 W 21st St). Entry is free, just RSVP to foolsgold@epiphanymediallc.com. We got Primo!! Our keep-it-real meter is in the red, y'all. It's hip-hop-o'clock.
