We met a couple guys from Oregon last night who told us that in their home state you can get caught with anything under an ounce of marijuana and the police will not even write you a ticket. They also said that the only people outside of the US who know where or what Oregon is are the Dutch, who, when they meet an Oregonian, say something like "You guys always beat us in the Cannabis Cup!" It is this kind of committment to excellence that drew us to the wacked-out folk of Portland's Blitzen Trapper. Their last album Wild Mountain Nation was a fun mess, but it looks like they've mellowed out a little bit for the next one (coming in September on Sub Pop), represented here by its title track. In case you don't have speakers or can't actually listen right now, it sounds, according to a friend of ours, like "a really good Cat Stevens song from a yet-to-be-made Wes Anderson film about a dysfunctional family who've just converted to Islam." Yep. It may also be about becoming a wolf. Check the Trap on tour in the Pacific Northwest and Canada in late August and early September.
