Kate Nash isn't answering his calls and Craig David is too busy drinking protein shakes so Kano has come running back to the grime scene with his tail between his legs. I was sent his latest mixtape, 140 Grime Street, on a CASSETTE TAPE (what do I with these things again? Are they compatible with Macs?) this week. It's basically a grime version of T.I.'s King —lots of horns, average songs and clichéd rapper lyrics that will be forgotten the moment they are heard. But that's pretty good going for Kano judging by his last album.
In the last column I announced the return of the grime DVD. This week is a much less interesting milestone: the advent of the dubstep DVD. If ever it was in doubt how depressingly dull dubstep producers are, a new documentary DVD called Dubfiles proves it beyond question. It's basically three quarters of an hour of footage of monged-out men who haven't seen the sun in the past five years saying stuff like: "It's all about the beats, bass and energy, maaaaannn." The government should use it as an anti-cannabis campaign video.
Troy Miller, the guy behind the epochal Practice Hours grime DVD series, is apparently involved but by the looks of it he doesn't seem to have had much input. I'm guessing they just borrowed his camera to shoot it or something.
Seeing this has got me thinking, though, and I've come up with a great idea. The time has come for a remake of The Addams Family. It will be easy to do. Casting directors need look no further than this DVD for actors. Hatcha looks like a cross between Lurch and someone you'd see lurking around a graveyard at night - in a coffin. D1 looks like Uncle Fester's little brother. And Benga, of course, could play Cousin Itt. (Thinking about it again, it might be a bit more difficult to find the female leads within the dubstep scene.)
I previewed Blackdown & Dusk's debut album, Margins Music, on here a few weeks ago but didn't have any songs to put up. Luckily for you, the pair have put together a very fancy little video which gives a good idea of how the album sounds.
Finally, Paleface's "Do You Mind" has been given a grime remix by Terror Danjah, which you can listen to below. It's not as entrancing as the funky house remix but it's still pretty tasty. Enjoy.
