Oakland’s City Council voted unanimously yesterday (May 16) to rename a street after the Tupac. Tupac Shakur Way will be on MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Van Buren Avenue where the rap legend rented an apartment at in the early ’90s. It was there he began his solo career and released 2Pacalypse Now after disbanding from Digital Underground.
The proposal was introduced by councilmember Caroll Fife. “The City Council intends to honor Tupac Shakur’s contribution to Oakland and the Bay Area by retaining the existing street name, adding an additional honorary street name and installing commemorative plaques or signs and intends that the costs associated with such a commemorative act will be borne by the Tupac Shakur Foundation,” she stated in the resolution. “Tupac Shakur’s legacy will continue through his contributions in art and social outreach. Through his family and fans, touching countless lives of children and elders over the years while alive and after his death, taken too young by gun violence.”
