If you're a longtime reader of The FADER, you already know that one of the most exciting places for music and culture is South Africa. From Kwaito to Spoek Mathambo, the country has both a rich history and a vibrant present and future. To further spotlight that future, FADER has teamed up with Sprite to showcase some great scenes and bring you a look at the arts coming out of South Africa. We'll be doing this in January and February through a series of video documentaries and photographs highlighting some of our favorite talent: Okmalumkoolkat, an MC who might be best known for his featured vocal on the underground hit, “Gusheshe;” pastelheart, a graffiti artist with a modern slant; Tony Shabangu, a young rapper; Tarryn Alberts, arguably one of the most progressive and busiest hip hop dancers in SA; Gasak, a socially conscious graffiti artist and Lenny Mogoba, a basketball player taking a surprising turn in her career to become a medical doctor. All the films and photos are via the amazing eye of South African director Adriaan Louw of we-are-awesome. You'll also get a peek into scenes such as Jo'burg's Braamfontein district and its young creative entrepreneurs, the stanced car scene coming out of the Cape Flats in Cape Town, and a big look at the South African music scene. We're on the ground giving you a full slice of what is happening in the heart of the cities. Check back at the top of 2014 on TheFADER.com.
