There's a moment midway through Memory Tapes’ remix of Tame Impala’s "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards," where the toy piano twinkle gives way to what sounds like a complete erosion. The music fizzles out, sounding like a digital match being snuffed (what's a digital match? Did I just invent it? Don't steal my ideas.). It's a great moment, and while it's brief, it perfectly captures the sort of endless loop, stuck-in-your-own-head purgatory of the original. Will you ever change if you keep thinking about changing? If the same thing happens over and over again does that mean that you're doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over? If "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards" is any indication, the answer to that question is yes, probably. And as much of a bummer as that is, at least we can ride out our repeated mistakes with an endless stream of remixes of one of the better songs of the year. Tame Impala's Lonerism is out right now on Modular, with a "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards" Remix package to follow on December 18th.
